After CalliopeLand, we were introduced to two very interesting people, the artist Hoop and the actress/model Penelope Palmer. They both emerged out of the Andy Warhol scene. Penelope was the youngest person ever to appear in one of Andy's screen tests - at the age of six months. She then went on to acting as a young girl living in France. Hoop hung out with East Village artists and decided to go a different direction from graffiti by creating his own art cars, and he continues with his work. So here is the story of what happened on Saturday on the train ride home from the Mermaid Parade:

By the time we got on the train we were all drained and irritable. The beach was so crowded and you couldn't even walk across the boardwalk, which took it's toll on all of us - also I was still sick, and taking steroids for my asthma. My group included Jackie, Peter, John and Maria, who has braces on her arms and legs and walks with a cane.

The train was there when we got to the top of the stairs, so we jumped into the first car. There weren't a lot of seats, so Maria sat next to this guy with a radio in his lap, which he then turned on. Maria say she didn't want to listen to that, so we moved to the far end of the car where there was another seat. When the train gets moving the guy turns up his radio to full blast. Now my crew was not happy and they all started complaining about his crappy music, so I offered to ask him to turn it down. Jackie said to yes do that, so I did.

I walked over to him and said, "Can you please turn down the radio."
His partner asked me why. I explained that it had been a long day and we were all tired and we just wanted to relax. I also reminded him that we already moved because we didn't want to listen to the music. So his friend took the radio from him and lowered it. I said, "Thank you."
On my way back to my seat I was met with loud applause from my crew. That just pissed off the guy with the radio, so he turned the music all the way back up.

I watched him, as he boldly took a swig from his 40 oz Smirnoff Ice. I imagined taking his radio and throwing out onto the platform when the doors opened. Then I noticed that his radio was just sitting on his knees, hands free. So when the train doors were about to open I walked over to him, grabbed his radio and placed it on the platform. I figured if I threw it he would have a case against me for destruction of property, or maybe it would turn into a nasty fist fight. This way, I figured his drunk ass would just be left at the stop. However, I didn't put the radio far enough out for fear of being left behind myself, so he was able to retrieve it and make it back to push me.

That's when John stepped in without fear to defend me. He grabbed the guy took off the guy's sunglasses so he - John- could look him in the eye. Then yelled at him. I took that opportunity to kick the guy past John, but I don't think I made much of a connection with my flip flops on. So I tried to punch his hand, so he would let go of the railing he was clutching - again it seemed like it didn't take. Then I see Peter's hand come from over my shoulder and he starts punching the guy's hand, but he still didn't let go. Then we all let him go and walked back to our seats.

It didn't end there though. The radio stayed off but then the shit talking started. He was making fun of my hair. There were a couple of hipster girls sitting across from him that had been dancing and a pair of boys, that also took his side. They started arguing and commenting. I responded to the radio guy by reminding him that he was on "a public fucking train" and that "not everybody wants to listen to his shitty music".

The girls at his end responded that they liked it. But I heard another female voice from just past them say, "She did everything right." And the man sitting across from me with his little boy, said that he also thought I did the right thing and wished he could have - that if he didn't have a toddler with him, he would have done the same.

Then Jackie stepped up the trash talk from our end; and it escalated until one of the guys - supporting radio asshole - threw a penny at her. Peter told her not to get up because he didn't want to get into a physical fight. So she dropped it and that group began to sing garbage at the top of their lungs. But eventually more and more people got on the train and they shut up because they lost their nerve. I kept my eye on the guy with the radio the whole time and he couldn't even look in my direction for all his shit talk. And the best he could come up with was, "Kiss My Grits."

For the record the offensive music in question was bad dance rave type techno. The kind of stuff you need hard drugs to enjoy.

The Chances of the World Changing

I was very touched by a film I watched on PBS's POV last night titled "The Chances of the World Changing". It was about this guy who saved a rare turtle from the soup pot, took it home, and named it Empress. Some time later he saved 1,200 more turtles -some of which are now extinct in the wild- and housed them in his Manhattan apartment. His story made it into the mainstream media briefly as a light story and then dropped. The filmakers take over the story when the man, Richard Ogust, is in crisis to save the turtles from extintion and find a permanant place to house them against all odds and sacrificing his own personal life for the cause. It's a sad story illustrating how many turtles are unprotected and will soon fade out of existence.

We are all wired into a survival trip now.

Who can forget the incredible scandal that erupted back in May of 2002? Around about the middle of that month, details began to emerge about the August 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing that specifically warned Bush about Osama bin Laden's determination to strike the United States.

Wait. Actually, everyone forgot, because two days later, the Bush administration unleashed a blizzard of dire warnings about impending terrorist attacks. FBI Director Robert Mueller intoned such attacks were "inevitable," and the Department of Homeland Security announced the imminent, explosive destruction of all American railroads, along with the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.

Who can forget the incredible scandal that erupted back in June of 2003? Over the course of two days, reports emerged about serious doubts held by the CIA regarding the credibility of the administration's claim Iraq tried to buy uranium from Niger. On the heels of this, Congress unfurled its 9/11 report, which criticized all levels of the Bush administration for its performance before and during the attacks.

Wait. Actually, everyone forgot, because the Bush administration unleashed another blizzard of warnings about impending terrorist attacks. Specifically, the Department of Homeland Security warned terrorists were, once again, preparing to attack the United States with suicide missions using commercial airliners as bombs.

Who can forget the incredible scandal that erupted back in December of 2003? 9/11 Commission chairman Thomas Keane declared the attacks of 9/11 should have been prevented. The next day, a Federal appeals court ruled against the administration on the case of suspected terrorist Jose Padilla, stating Padilla could not be held indefinitely without being charged.

Wait. Actually, everyone forgot, because the Bush administration increased the terrorism threat level to Orange and claimed more suicide planes were about to come zooming out of the sky. Six international flights were diverted due to potential terrorist actions of some passengers who were later identified as an insurance salesman, an elderly Chinese woman and a five-year-old boy.

Who can forget the incredible scandal that erupted back in May of 2004? Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared on Meet the Press and stated the intelligence on Iraqi WMD he'd been given for his UN presentation had been "inaccurate and wrong and, in some cases, deliberately misleading." Horrifying new pictures of the torture, rape and murder of prisoners by Americans at Abu Ghraib prison became public. The American military accidentally bombed a wedding party in Iraq, killing 40 civilians.

Wait. Actually, everyone forgot, because FBI Director Mueller and Attorney General John Ashcroft announced they had reports from multiple sources of al Qaeda's "specific intention to hit the United States hard." The threat levels were not raised, but dire warnings of impending catastrophe were offered by the administration for the next several days.

The recipe is simple, like the directions on the back of a shampoo bottle. Damaging reports of Bush administration malfeasance emerge. Warnings of imminent terrorist-borne doom immediately follow, all spread far and wide by said Bush administration. Lather, rinse, repeat.

There are many more instances of this curious timing to be found, but apparently, no one in the administration is concerned this dubious pattern - spreading fear among the populace to change the subject, an act of terrorism itself - might start to wear thin.

Who is going to forget the incredible scandals of June and July of 2007? The Bush administration leaves Nixon in the dust by commuting the prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. This action strongly suggests the existence of a quid pro quo between Libby and Bush's people to cover up the criminal activities of powerful officials like Vice President Dick Cheney, who had recently claimed his office wasn't part of the executive branch to avoid handing papers over to the National Archives.

The administration deploys spurious claims of Executive Privilege to avoid subpoenas regarding the patently illegal NSA wiretapping of American citizens. That privilege is extended to deny Congressional access to Harriet Miers, former White House counsel, regarding the issue of fired US attorneys. Contempt charges are threatened against Miers, and the NSA subpoena stonewall comes closer to getting openly challenged in court. Alberto Gonzales is exposed as having lied to the Senate in his testimony about FBI abuses of the Patriot Act.

Few of the benchmarks for success in Iraq are met. Desperate to halt a tide of GOP defections from his Iraq policy, Bush again coughs up the totally discredited link between 9/11 and Iraq, saying, "The same people that attacked us on September the 11th is a crowd that is now bombing people, killing innocent men, women and children." The House again votes to withdraw American troops from Iraq. A new Harris poll on Bush's approval rating is published. The number reads 26 percent.

Wait.

Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff all but guarantees devastating new terror attacks against the United States this summer. He bases this warning on a "gut feeling." White House spokesman Tony Snow threatens that withdrawal from Iraq would bring terrorism "to a shopping mall near you."

Meanwhile, al Qaeda is alleged to be as secure in Pakistan and Afghanistan as they were before 9/11, yet no one in the administration connects this new security to the drain of resources happening in Iraq. Additionally, no one in the administration points out the fact that, if Chertoff's gut is indeed correct, and we are indeed attacked again, responsibility for that attack will fall upon those who manufactured war in Iraq. Never mind the fact that if an attack is allowed to happen, even a minor one, more of our constitutional rights and protections will be eviscerated by the very same people who failed to stop it again.

Will everyone forget about the scandals of June and July 2007 amid these deadly warnings of coming death?

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Chris Ryan

Lower East Side punks may know Chris Ryan through his underground band Team Spider, headed by 80-year-old poet Zack. Or they may know him as the guy with the camera who organizes shows in Tompkins Square Park. Some know him as the Viking Lost in the Bronx from his independent film collaborative “Warriors: The Bike Race.” He is also the television producer of “Team Spider Television” on Manhattan Neighborhood Network.

Ryan took a moment out of his nonstop work schedule to sit and talk with me about two documentaries he worked on concerning the arrests at Critical Mass --a collective bike ride which gathers at Union Square Park on the last Friday of every month-- since the Republican National Convention (RNC) came to New York city in 2004.

His first documentary of the series to come out was, “Still We Ride,” a collaboration finished last year and shown at the Bicycle Film Festival at the Film Archives, and Fuck the System movie night at CB’s 313 Gallery. Ryan is reworking the second documentary “Criminal Mass” and would like to hold a double feature showing of the two when he is done. They are both currently available for sale through his website teamspider.com.

Your Show Team Spider is mostly bands, but you also do a lot on critical mass and the protests. What’s your goal with the show?

The little catch phrase we came up with is punk rock, poetry, and politics. So if it fits that parameter, then I feel it’s worthy of inclusion. Any one of those could make a show, but the three of them combined makes a stew.

When did you start doing shows on critical mass? Was it after the RNC?

No, we’ve been shooting on critical mass rides for years prior to that. It used to be a lot of fun. It was crazy. It was wild. Believe me we did things that you probably should be arrested for. Now it’s so angelic and coached by lawyers. We used to take over entire tunnels with bicycles.

What you shot for the show turned into two documentaries. How did that come about? Was it because you got arrested?

I was always shooting critical mass rides and it was always fun. I was bringing critical mass to the screens on TV. But the RNC 2004, that’s when they really started the persecution and I was arrested on that ride and handcuffed. I managed to get some video from my handcuffed hands and they kept arresting and kept harassing and I kept getting arrested. And I kept filming it.

How many times did you get arrested?

I got officially run through the system twice, but there were a couple of other times where I got handcuffed and they let me go. And one time I snuck my camera into the paddy wagon and did interviews there.

I went to the Lost film festival which was this traveling film festival, which I had a bunch of films in, and some people had like a four minute or five minute maybe six, short film. And it had interviews with people outside the Guantanamo on the Hudson facility pier 57. And I was like, “Oh Wow,” because I couldn’t even see what was going on. I said, “I have to meet these people.” So I asked the film festival director who they were and he pointed them out. I said “hi,” really quick when I was walking out the door. My initial thing was, “Yeah, we should trade footage.

Now you are working on a Second Documentary on the same subject.

Still We Ride is very much the political end and documentary. Criminal Mass was more my personal story. I’m the thread that carries it. What’s it like? With all these images of people in handcuffs. What’s it mean? You spend the next year and a half of your life to prove you’re innocent.

Out of all of your projects which is your main love?

That’s tough (pauses to think).
I mean, I really enjoy playing music live and I really enjoy shooting live. You know, filming. So sadly those seem to be the small percentage of the time it takes to finish anything. You can play a song in three minutes and it’s over and it’s great. You get instant gratification sharing with an audience. You record that song and you can spend weeks on it or hours on the snare sound. And that can be crazy but that lasts forever. The same with film. I love to shoot but I hate to edit. I hate to go through. I can make all this stuff but it’s hard to prioritize what projects are more important now. Sometimes I’m a media news person. Sometimes I reflect a year and a half later what really did that event mean. That’s my problem. If I really enjoyed one more than the other, maybe I’d drop one of them and be more successful at it.

Circus Amok is a political theater troupe that travels around New York city parks performing for free. Each year they take on a different social issue and design a circus show around it. Last year the topic was eminent domain and this year it was immigration. The group was formed in 1989, but started performing in public spaces in 1994. Their show includes juggling acts, acrobatics, colorful costumes, and puppets.

Cut and Run, the Only Brave Thing to Do

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Friends,

Tomorrow marks the day that we will have been in Iraq longer than we were in all of World War II.

That's right. We were able to defeat all of Nazi Germany, Mussolini, and the entire Japanese empire in LESS time than it's taken the world's only superpower to secure the road from the airport to downtown Baghdad.

And we haven't even done THAT. After 1,347 days, in the same time it took us to took us to sweep across North Africa, storm the beaches of Italy, conquer the South Pacific, and liberate all of Western Europe, we cannot, after over 3 and 1/2 years, even take over a single highway and protect ourselves from a homemade device of two tin cans placed in a pothole. No wonder the cab fare from the airport into Baghdad is now running around $35,000 for the 25-minute ride. And that doesn't even include a friggin' helmet.

Is this utter failure the fault of our troops? Hardly. That's because no amount of troops or choppers or democracy shot out of the barrel of a gun is ever going to "win" the war in Iraq. It is a lost war, lost because it never had a right to be won, lost because it was started by men who have never been to war, men who hide behind others sent to fight and die.

Let's listen to what the Iraqi people are saying, according to a recent poll conducted by the University of Maryland:

** 71% of all Iraqis now want the U.S. out of Iraq.

** 61% of all Iraqis SUPPORT insurgent attacks on U.S. troops.

Yes, the vast majority of Iraqi citizens believe that our soldiers should be killed and maimed! So what the hell are we still doing there? Talk about not getting the hint.

There are many ways to liberate a country. Usually the residents of that country rise up and liberate themselves. That's how we did it. You can also do it through nonviolent, mass civil disobedience. That's how India did it. You can get the world to boycott a regime until they are so ostracized they capitulate. That's how South Africa did it. Or you can just wait them out and, sooner or later, the king's legions simply leave (sometimes just because they're too cold). That's how Canada did it.

The one way that DOESN'T work is to invade a country and tell the people, "We are here to liberate you!" -- when they have done NOTHING to liberate themselves. Where were all the suicide bombers when Saddam was oppressing them? Where were the insurgents planting bombs along the roadside as the evildoer Saddam's convoy passed them by? I guess ol' Saddam was a cruel despot -- but not cruel enough for thousands to risk their necks. "Oh no, Mike, they couldn't do that! Saddam would have had them killed!" Really? You don't think King George had any of the colonial insurgents killed? You don't think Patrick Henry or Tom Paine were afraid? That didn't stop them. When tens of thousands aren't willing to shed their own blood to remove a dictator, that should be the first clue that they aren't going to be willing participants when you decide you're going to do the liberating for them.

A country can HELP another people overthrow a tyrant (that's what the French did for us in our revolution), but after you help them, you leave. Immediately. The French didn't stay and tell us how to set up our government. They didn't say, "we're not leaving because we want your natural resources." They left us to our own devices and it took us six years before we had an election. And then we had a bloody civil war. That's what happens, and history is full of these examples. The French didn't say, "Oh, we better stay in America, otherwise they're going to kill each other over that slavery issue!"

The only way a war of liberation has a chance of succeeding is if the oppressed people being liberated have their own citizens behind them -- and a group of Washingtons, Jeffersons, Franklins, Ghandis and Mandellas leading them. Where are these beacons of liberty in Iraq? This is a joke and it's been a joke since the beginning. Yes, the joke's been on us, but with 655,000 Iraqis now dead as a result of our invasion (source: Johns Hopkins University), I guess the cruel joke is on them. At least they've been liberated, permanently.

So I don't want to hear another word about sending more troops (wake up, America, John McCain is bonkers), or "redeploying" them, or waiting four months to begin the "phase-out." There is only one solution and it is this: Leave. Now. Start tonight. Get out of there as fast as we can. As much as people of good heart and conscience don't want to believe this, as much as it kills us to accept defeat, there is nothing we can do to undo the damage we have done. What's happened has happened. If you were to drive drunk down the road and you killed a child, there would be nothing you could do to bring that child back to life. If you invade and destroy a country, plunging it into a civil war, there isn't much you can do 'til the smoke settles and blood is mopped up. Then maybe you can atone for the atrocity you have committed and help the living come back to a better life.

The Soviet Union got out of Afghanistan in 36 weeks. They did so and suffered hardly any losses as they left. They realized the mistake they had made and removed their troops. A civil war ensued. The bad guys won. Later, we overthrew the bad guys and everybody lived happily ever after. See! It all works out in the end!

The responsibility to end this war now falls upon the Democrats. Congress controls the purse strings and the Constitution says only Congress can declare war. Mr. Reid and Ms. Pelosi now hold the power to put an end to this madness. Failure to do so will bring the wrath of the voters. We aren't kidding around, Democrats, and if you don't believe us, just go ahead and continue this war another month. We will fight you harder than we did the Republicans. The opening page of my website has a photo of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, each made up by a collage of photos of the American soldiers who have died in Bush's War. But it is now about to become the Bush/Democratic Party War unless swift action is taken.

This is what we demand:

1. Bring the troops home now. Not six months from now. NOW. Quit looking for a way to win. We can't win. We've lost. Sometimes you lose. This is one of those times. Be brave and admit it.

2. Apologize to our soldiers and make amends. Tell them we are sorry they were used to fight a war that had NOTHING to do with our national security. We must commit to taking care of them so that they suffer as little as possible. The mentally and physically maimed must get the best care and significant financial compensation. The families of the deceased deserve the biggest apology and they must be taken care of for the rest of their lives.

3. We must atone for the atrocity we have perpetuated on the people of Iraq. There are few evils worse than waging a war based on a lie, invading another country because you want what they have buried under the ground. Now many more will die. Their blood is on our hands, regardless for whom we voted. If you pay taxes, you have contributed to the three billion dollars a week now being spent to drive Iraq into the hellhole it's become. When the civil war is over, we will have to help rebuild Iraq. We can receive no redemption until we have atoned.

In closing, there is one final thing I know. We Americans are better than what has been done in our name. A majority of us were upset and angry after 9/11 and we lost our minds. We didn't think straight and we never looked at a map. Because we are kept stupid through our pathetic education system and our lazy media, we knew nothing of history. We didn't know that WE were the ones funding and arming Saddam for many years, including those when he massacred the Kurds. He was our guy. We didn't know what a Sunni or a Shiite was, never even heard the words. Eighty percent of our young adults (according to National Geographic) were not able to find Iraq on the map. Our leaders played off our stupidity, manipulated us with lies, and scared us to death.

But at our core we are a good people. We may be slow learners, but that "Mission Accomplished" banner struck us as odd, and soon we began to ask some questions. Then we began to get smart. By this past November 7th, we got mad and tried to right our wrongs. The majority now know the truth. The majority now feel a deep sadness and guilt and a hope that somehow we can make make it all right again.

Unfortunately, we can't. So we will accept the consequences of our actions and do our best to be there should the Iraqi people ever dare to seek our help in the future. We ask for their forgiveness.

We demand the Democrats listen to us and get out of Iraq now.
